We are able to accomplish our mission in several ways:
Who Are The Amazing Kids That We Acknowledge?
DFW Kids On The Move is about honoring and acknowledging the amazing kids throughout the DFW Metroplex who are on the move.
The kids are your everyday kids doing everyday things that often go unnoticed.
These kids are great helpers at home, diligent in their schoolwork, and all around great kids.
These kids are often overlooked because they're not always star athletes or on the A+ Honor Roll but nevertheless, they give it all they've got.
They keep showing up for life, for their families, and for themselves.
They deserved to be noticed for the good deeds that they do, day in and day out.
They are DFW Kids On The Move!
Do you know an amazing kid (or kids) that we should recognize? Let us know here.
We are able to accomplish our mission in several ways:
- Through our programs, these teen girls also learn about individuals and businesses that support the DFW community through racial equality,
- Volunteering to encourage the importance of community service,
- Monthly field trips and outings to inspire a love for the community, and
- Honoring and acknowledging the amazing kids throughout the DFW Metroplex who are on the move.

Taking Care of Our PlanetCelebrating Earth Day - April 2021
There's one simple reason as to why we should all be concerned about taking care of our planet..because we live here. Because we live here, we also want our children, grandchildren. great-grandchildren, and so forth to also have a healthy place to live. To be honest, there was a time in my life when it didn't matter to me whether I was helping to save the planet that I live on. However, the more that I learned how important conserving energy, recycling. and not littering. I came onboard. Today, I'm committed to preserving the beautiful planet that I enjoy and protecting it's inhabitants. How can you help protect planet earth? Recycling? Picking up trash? Buying biodegradable products? Turning off the lights and water when they are not in use? Let's save our planet! Jazzeline Cager |
Feeling Overwhelmed? Tired? Anxious?
Set Clear Boundaries by Teia Jones
Setting clear boundaries is necessary. Without boundaries, there's no balance or border in your life. You're more than likely to always feel tired, anxious, and overwhelmed. When you set clear boundaries for yourself, you're placing yourself in a position to make healthy decisions for both you and your family. It means that you are making yourself a priority. Setting boundaries is important because they teach people how to treat you. They teach people what you are and are not willing to tolerate in your life. Within boundaries, you show your power of saying "No" and meaning it. When you create boundaries, you will possibly be misunderstood, disliked, and/or disregarded by some people and all of those are perfectly fine. What's New For DFW Kids On The Move This Month
January 2021
My mother has always been a huge inspiration for any and everything I do. Seriously, she’s my role model, my teacher, my inspiration, my confidant and my personal therapist whenever I needed it.
My mom is very smart, if she sees something needs to be done, she’ll do it, just to make sure we are able to live comfortably. I could brag about my mom for hours because she is just that great. She’s very strong, in recent trying times, she has been my shoulder to cry on, and someone I can talk to no matter what. My mom is the best person I know, and I hope when I grow up and have my own children someday, I’ll be as smart, strong, nurturing, and kind as she is. Happy Mother's Day Mom Love Jazz |

2021..It's Time To Press Reset by Teia JonesIt’s this time of year when so many of us press the reset button in our lives.
We reflect upon the past year and all the things that happened. There were so many things that took place in 2020, both good and bad, that taught us lifelong lessons. Most of our expensive planners became useless and the calendar became a crossword puzzle. For some, our goals and dreams were derailed. For others, abundance proved itself with the excess Amazon boxes sitting on the front porch. We added more titles to our name like teacher, entrepreneur, mediator of the children’s countless boredom fights, gourmet cook (or whatever was left over in the pantry). We learned to pivot. We became so creative that our children can now say that they lived in towers and castles (all made of empty cardboard boxes of course). We walked in our neighborhoods and bought anything that resembled a bicycle all to have some form of normalcy in our lives. We created havens. We learned to conduct family reunions on zoom. We rationed out toilet paper to our children with clear and direct instructions. 2020 took everything we had and then some. It taught us to save, and then save some more. It taught us to be grateful for frontline and essential workers like truck drivers, nurses, and grocery clerks. We learned to play board games again with our families. Movie night became the highlight event of the week. We made it. We did it. We’re here and we’re grateful. What does 2021 have in store for us? Who knows. Will it be better than 2020? Hopefully so. What we do know is that as long as we have our families, our health, and the mindset to pivot when necessary..we’ve got this! 2021..we’re ready for you! |

What Christmas Means To Me by DFW Kids On The Move Staff
December 2020
To Me, Christmas means love, family, sacrifice, and so much more. As a Christian, I believe in the sacrifice that God made by giving us His son Jesus Christ. This gift indeed was the greatest gift ever given. It was a gift of love and sacrifice.
Each year, the holidays are a reflection of God's sacrifice and love. It's also a time of sharing gifts with my family and all those special people in my life. Seeing the smile on my kids' faces as they open gifts gives me such a feeling of warmth and love.
This year, is really special, because of my new DFW Kids On The Move family. I am thankful to create new memories with each team member and to read all about their Christmas thoughts. I am also thankful for all of our readers and subscribers this year.
Merry Christmas to all,
Teia

From Nadia Graham
What Christmas means to me is celebrating the birth of Jesus, giving to others, the gift of giving, and spending time with family. One of my favorite Christmas memories is when I made candy cane reindeers and gave them to nurses at a hospital. Another favorite Christmas memory is when I received a Polaroid camera. I really enjoy celebrating Christmas and it's my favorite holiday. |
From Amaya Marsh
Christmas means sharing and giving, and spending time with one another. There are lots of people with limited income who don't get presents and don't get good or even healthy things to eat. Most of those people are just happy to be alive and able to spend time with each other. Christmas also means its a time that we celebrate the day Jesus was born. I am grateful for a good family that loves me and shows me how important I am to them almost daily. |
From Jazzeline Cager
Ever since I was young, I’ve always had a special connection to Christmas. Holiday music is playing, Christmas lights are all around, families gather from near and far and happiness is spread everywhere all through the love of Christmas. For me, I love connecting with my family through gifts, music and fun. Christmas is a time to be happy, a time to be around those you love, a time to celebrate each other |
From Zariah
What Christmas means to me is receiving gifts and giving gifts to my family. i love going into the store and picking out the special things that I think everyone will love. Christmas makes me realize how blessed I am to have many presents and to have family that I can spend my favorite holiday with. I absolutely love Christmas! |
From Chloe Elisabeth
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. Christmas to me means first and foremost celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christmas also means celebrating that my family is blessed in more ways than one. To me, Christmas is gifting back to the people you love, spending quality time with loved ones and just soaking in what all the Christmas season has to offer. On Christmas Eve we usually go out for breakfast after pictures with Santa and later that night we go and look at Christmas lights. We also enjoy visiting a live nativity in our neighborhood. My mom, sister and I bake and decorate cookies and watch Christmas movies too. On Christmas morning we wake up early, we pray as a family and wish Jesus a Happy Birthday. After we pray, we open our Christmas stockings and we all open our presents together. My mom usually makes something really good for Christmas breakfast and then we spend the day together. I love Christmas and spending it with the ones I love. |
From Miya Daniel
Some families don’t even celebrate Christmas, they mostly celebrate; Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Las Posadas(The Inns), Diwali, Chinese New Years, Boxing Day, Human Light, Hogmanay, Bodhi Day, Feast of St. Nicholas, and Malwid. These are just the celebrations in December around the world. Presents are not really the main thing about Christmas. Christmas is the time to be with family and about feeling good giving gifts to the ones you love. For this Christmas in my family, we are doing secret Santa for the first time ever. In two days, gifts will be exchanged and opened and appreciated. Even though we have a virus going around, being around family during this time is important. This should be a well celebrated time. I wish you all a very good holiday, whichever you celebrate. Please be safe and wear a mask if you are going to dinner to be safe. Have a very Merry Christmas! |

Gratitude
I honestly believe that there is always something to be grateful for. I've come to understand that my ability is someone else's inability. My issue is someone else's solution. My trash is another's treasure. There is absolutely always something to be grateful for.
In June 2020 when I stepped out of my familiar into the land of the unknown, I am grateful for the six young ladies (and their families) who joined me on this journey. I am grateful each time they turn in an article despite the fact that their worlds have been turned upside down this year. They have school deadlines and household chores, but they always follow through on their commitment to DFW Kids On The Move.
I am grateful that they always show up for the virtual meetings.. on time. They always say thank you after they've received their monthly gift boxes from me for doing their job amazingly. I am grateful.
I am also grateful for good health, family, friends, and good food.
I am grateful for a God that loves us unconditionally.
I Am Grateful!

Thanksgiving Gratitude - by Chloe Elisabeth
Thanksgiving has always been a great time in our house to show how grateful we are. We eat a lot of good food and desserts and spend time together. My mom asks each of us before we eat what we are thankful for. We take turns answering and then we pray to God thanking him for everything He has done for our family. I am grateful for my family and a safe cozy home to live in. We can also show gratefulness by helping others in their time of need. Let’s all find something to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving |
The Meaning of Gratitude - by Nadia G.
To me, gratitude means being thankful. I am grateful for food, music, and my family. Food helps me get through the day but sometimes it can make me tired. Music gets me through a lot, inspires me, and introduces me to amazing Fandoms (groups of fans). Family produced me and made me who I am. They cover my needs and give me stuff I enjoy. |
What I Am Thankful For - by Miya Daniel
I, personally, am grateful for my family as we have grown closer during this time. I am grateful for my best friends as they fill in my boredom.
I am grateful for my sisters, even when we argue, as they are also filling in my boredom.
I am grateful for the article and the founder and writers of it as it gives me something to do every month and it is very helpful. I am grateful for another birthday, Nov 28, as I am now 15.
I am actually grateful for my education, as the schools try to keep us safe and the teachers try to balance out teaching In- Person and teaching Virtually.
And lastly, I am most grateful for my spiritual angel and God for protecting me through the thick and thin situations and never giving up to protect me.
These are the things I am grateful for, thank you and Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas.

What I Am Grateful For - by Amaya M.
I am definitely grateful for my closest friend. She doesn’t even realize how much our friendship means to me. She is my voice of reason, whenever I’m having a disagreement with my family or friends. She is like my own personal “Therapist” and helps me whenever I seem to get emotional. I feel like I can tell her anything without the feeling of being judged. All of my friends are very supportive. I can express myself around them and I don’t have to stress about them judging me. Finally, I am thankful that I have a comfortable home to go to daily. So many people are homeless or don’t have a safe place to call home. My mother holds a special place of gratitude in my heart for always loving me and helping me get through things for that I am grateful!

The Importance of Gratitude - by Jazzeline C.
When I was younger, for Christmas, it was a requirement for my sister and I to say thank you to all of the people who gave us gifts, no matter how big or small. Even for Halloween, it was necessary for my sister and I to say thank you to the people who had just given us candy, even if they had just given me a handful of peanut butter candy, which I’m allergic to.
Why was this a requirement for us? To show that we appreciated the effort and thought that someone had put into making sure we were happy. When someone does something out of genuine kindness from their heart, we should show them that it has not gone unnoticed.
I’m so grateful for my mother teaching me this. I’m also grateful for my entire family. Without them I wouldn’t have the important values and morals that I need to have a fulfilling, great life. I hope everyone can find something to be truly grateful for even during the toughest times.
Happy Thanksgiving and great blessings to each and every one of you all.

What I'm Grateful For - by Zariah J.
There are many things that I am grateful for but there’s things like being able to go to the store and buy what we need that really matters to me.
Having food, water, and a roof over my head are other things that I am grateful for. As my mom always says, that are many things to be grateful for but those are just some of my main things.
Gratitude is a big thing in our house and we make sure to always be grateful for all things.

Meet Greg Fields, DFW Meteorologist
Interviewed by Amaya Marsh
What was one of your greatest challenges while studying to become a meteorologist?
Without question, my biggest challenge academically in pursuing my meteorology degree was the Physics! My head hurts just thinking about it. Other than that, I was the only black student in my department. It mattered that I saw no one that looked like me and I had to work hard to overcome the subtle message sent that this career choice was not “for me”. What keeps you grounded when you are dealing with difficulties at work or at home?
My faith and my family keep me grounded through all difficulties. Faith reminds me that whatever is happening is bigger than me—and God has answers, even when He doesn’t immediately reveal them to me. |
I have developed a passion for photography; does photography play an important role when there are weather alerts?
Yes, photography—and especially now, videography—play a huge role in telling the weather story.

I have noticed that live radars are used often when there are extreme weather conditions; is this challenging; gathering all of your data in time for the weather report or do you have a team that helps you?
Most often, I review radar and forecast guidance alone. However, on days when active weather is expected, other team members will share some of those responsibilities.

Over the years of being a public figure, what would you suggest are the best ways to develop one’s public speaking skills?
By the time you are hired as an on-air meteorologist, those skills need to be already developed. One way to prepare for this career is to read out loud and notice how you sound as you do so. Train yourself to speak well at all times—and it will be easier to do so when it is required.

As a community leader what advice would you give young aspiring leaders that you wish, you would have known as a young person?
I think I was well prepared for both a career as a scientist and as a public figure. Integrity as I define it is simply this: always living like someone is watching—whether your career is on TV or not.

What role does your faith play in both your professional and personal life?
My faith gives problems perspective—as long as we are healthy and well, everything else is just a situation.

What counsel would you give young girls who are interested in becoming a meteorologist but are afraid that it is a male-dominated field?
Look on air right now—meteorology is no longer a male-dominated field! I would encourage aspiring meteorologists—male or female—to be mindful of the need to be professional, in spite of current trends. Respect and credibility are earned—and can be easily destroyed when we forget that we work to tell the weather story. Be cautious of self-promotion.

Mama In The Gray AreaMeet Ceshia Gray - Wife, Mom, Educator, Foster Care/Adoption Advocate, and Founder of Mama In The Gray Area
What motivated you to adopt? I’ve always known that I wanted to be a mom. I’ve also known since I was a young girl that I wanted to adopt a child. When I was younger, I had a best-friend who was a child in foster care. She was my summer-camp best friend. The last summer together, she told me she was foster child and would be moving to a new foster home, so she wouldn’t be returning to camp the next year. I had no idea what foster care was at that time. So, I went home, asked my parents about it, and informed them that my friend was in foster care. After they explained to me and my siblings more about it, I asked if they could adopt my friend. Turns out, she was moving foster homes to join her siblings. So, she couldn’t come stay with us. I believe I was about 10 years old at the time and from that moment on, I made a promise to myself that once I became an adult that I would try my best to provide a safe home for as many little girls in foster care possible. And if one or two just so happened to need a permanent home or Forever Family, that I would be that family for her. |
Mama In The Gray Area Continued..
Interviewed by Jazzeline Cager
When starting the adoption process, was there an “ideal child” you were looking for?
When beginning the adoption process, I don’t think that I had an “ideal child”. I only had 3 requests: that the child is female, of African American descent, and not older than our oldest son.

Did you ever have any fears or concerns when going through the adoption process?
I had no concerns or fears when going through the adoption process. In hindsight, I believe I was very naïve in that thinking. Since finalizing my daughter’s adoption, there has been moments of concern and maybe even a tad bit of fear, regarding the unknown. The what-ifs, if you will. I would say that those concerns were more personal for me, than relative to the actual adoption process.

Why do you think there are so many children that have yet to be adopted?
I think a lot of people prefer babies and toddlers; they want the child to be as young as possible for various reasons. So, that kind of leaves older children in care for an extended period of time. I would have to say that maybe fear of the unknown is why there are so many legally-free foster children, who have yet to find adoptive families.

I know that you already had birth children, what are some ways you all prepared them for the new child being brought into the home?
Yes, my husband (Kermit) and I have 3 biological sons. When we started fostering, Kahlin (our oldest son), was 5 years old. Kruze was 3 and Kreed was 1 year old. They would randomly and casually mention that they wanted a sister, so after a while, we sat them down and told them that as a family we are going to have a little girl come stay with us for a while. We explained that eventually, each little girl may go home to her mommy & daddy, but while she’s in our home – she will be there sister. We encouraged them to love and respect her, and to look after her like they look after one another already. To prepare them for each new placement, we’d allow them to each pick out a new toy for every little girl that joins our family as a gift for her. It made them so excited and proud to be doing something nice for another kid. Now that they’re older and we’ve since adopted our daughter, we take it a step further and ask them if they are okay with us continuing to help little girls who need a safe home and family. Our children know that if either of them ask for a “break from fostering” or say they’re not ready for a new placement, then we will respect their request until every family member is all in agreement.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while starting the adoption process?
The biggest challenge I faced while starting the adoption process will have to be realizing how much work I really didn’t know goes into fostering and dealing with children who have experienced various traumas, on top of the trauma caused by being separated from their families. It’s a psychological butt-kicking and these children need adults and foster parents who are in it for the long haul, or however long they are needed, in order to support them through this chapter of their stories. That can be various therapy sessions, middle of the night crying spells, trauma-induced temper tantrums, multiple nightmares, various illnesses and doctors’ visits, etc. Fostering and Adoption is not all unicorns and rainbows. There are cloudy days and thunderstorms and every adult who signs up for this must be ready to weather the storm with these children!
What is your hope for families considering adopting?
My hope for families that are considering adopting is simple; Be open, selfless, and available for it all… not just the fun parts, but the tough parts. That’s the part that build character and lasting connections. Give your all to your children. Remember that Adoption is not about You.

What are some of the things your family did to make the new child feel welcomed?
Some of the things my family does to make a new child feel welcome is allow them to choose the meal for the family on their first night with us. We also take the child to shop for & pick out their own bedding. My family is notorious for movie nights. So, we will let each little girl who is old enough to communicate, pick the movie for our first family movie night with her. We like to keep it simple, as to not overwhelm each new child. We take it slow and let her guide how fast or slow we move in acclimating her to our family.

What does your family do to have fun?
We do so much! We love to travel, so there are times when we plan a last-minute family getaway and/or staycation. We have themed movie nights and game nights. My kids are easy to please, so library dates so they can check-out a new book is one of our things. We will have a pizza picnic in the park, in a heartbeat.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) nearly 1 in every 11 girls have reported experiencing some form of physical violence while dating this year alone. For guys, it’s about 1 in 15. Unfortunately, these statistics are both alarming and increasing. For the month of October, we at DFW Kids On The Move, are committed to bringing awareness to this epidemic.
When we hear about domestic violence, it’s not common to also consider this issue within our younger population. We assume that violence only takes place in adult relationships. However, it is happening within teen relationships also and unless we bring awareness to this issue, it will often go unnoticed and not taken seriously. Many teens may not realize that they are actually in unhealthy relationships therefore awareness and education are vital. |
Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is a form of violence that occurs among two teens in intimate and close relationships. This consists of physical violence, sexual violence, psychological aggression, and stalking. These types of teen dating violent behaviors can happen either in person or online according to the CDC. 26% of women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence by the time they turn 18.
More has to be done to decrease and wishfully eradicate this epidemic. When we educate our children, they become aware of the signs to look for and will know what to do in case they have these experiences. When we discuss these types of issues before they start dating, teens will know that they can always reach out to us as their parents, caregivers, etc.

My Q & A With Ruth Greer, Family Nurse Practitioner
by Jazzeline Cager
1. Can you tell us about your job?
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner. That person is a Registered Nurse who has an additional 3 years of education that taught us how to diagnose illnesses and write prescriptions. I worked many years in different hospitals until I decided to open my own pediatric clinic. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am able to have an independent clinic with my own patients. I opened Malcolm X Pediatric Clinic in the South Dallas area on November 19, 2001. I am the sole health care provider with a staff of 4 Medical Assistants. We provide a full arrange of health care services including immunizations, drawing blood, flu shots, physical exams and sports exams. I am proud to say that I am not taking care of multiple generations of families. Children who I cared for are now bringing their children to me and that really makes me feel good, knowing that the families trust me with the care of their children just as their parents trusted me with their care.
2. Why did you choose to work with children? What do you like the most about your job?
I have always seen children as God's little perfect gifts and they are the ones I wanted to provide healthcare to. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am certified to treat all ages, but my love is for children. Having 4 children of my own, I can relate to everything that another mother goes through and theis compassion and an understanding that comes with first hand knowledge.
What I like most about my job is when parents bring the children back to the clinic for follow up visits and they are feeling well again. I also like the fact that I learn from my patients and their families daily. Providing health care to a community that is often forgotten is rewarding.
3. Do you have any tips for parents whose children are going back to the classroom this Fall that will help keep them safe from COVID?
The first thing that I do when a parent wants to discuss COVID and going back to school is to listen to their concerns. I then discuss the concerns. I do not feel that I am in the position to tell a parent whether or not their children should go back to school but there are recommendations that the CDC has recommended and I refer parents to that information. I do suggest that they keep close watch over their children for fever, runny nose and coughing and to seek medical care for their concerns. I let them know that were are there for them.
4. Since Halloween is coming up, do you think that it is safe for children to go trick-or-treating? Why or why not?
Halloween has changed so much over the years. Each year the number of children who come by my house has decreased tremendously. In past years I have suggested to families to participate in fall activities at their churches and schools. At this time, I would tell parents that maybe trick-or-treating this year might need to wait, but if they decide to participate, be careful.
5. How should families prepare to keep themselves healthy during the upcoming Winter months?
The best advice is to take care of yourself. Eat healthy, drink water, exercise and rest. Our community is plagued with chronic health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Many of these diseases are preventable with eating right, drinking water, exercising and getting the proper amount of rest. Fast food has resulted in many health problems. I also attribute gaming and watching TV to our chronic health problems. I stress to parents that their children are not the ones in the home purchasing foods that are not healthy, they are, so they need to make better choices. I also suggest taking a multivitamin, especially when the diet is not as it should be.
6. What do you like to do for fun?
I love playing with my two grandsons, ages 24 months and 30 months.
7. What is your favorite vacation spot?
That's a tough question. My husband I take a cruise every year (until COVID) so I have traveled all over the world. I have been to Hawaii,
Italy, Spain, Alaska just to name a few places. I can say that I prefer tropical vacations, so Alaska is not on my list of places to revisit. On one of our ports of call in Alaska, it was so cold when we got off of the ship until my husband and I got right back on the ship. I thought St. Lucia in the Virgin Islands was one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen but it rains an average of 129 days a year. As long as the weather is tropical, I love it.
8. What was your favorite subject in school and why?
My favorite subject in school was biology. I love all of the sciences because I like to know the origin of everything.
9. What's the name of a book that you've loved reading as a kid or as an adult?
That's an easy question. I have 4 bookshelves full of books that I have read. I read every single night. It is the last thing that I do every night. I sit in bed and read. I have many favorite authors. I guess I would have to say that Danielle Steele is my favorite. I have read about 99.5% of all of the books written by her. I love James Patterson, John Grisham, Greg Iles, Ruth Ware, Tom Clancy, Jodi Picoult, Delia Owens and Kimberla Lawson Roby. Right now I am reading The Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins which is part of The Hunger Games series. I love reading so much that regardless of how tired I am from my day, I crawl into bed with a good book.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Anything with cheese on it and anything chocolate for desert.

Now It's Q & A Time With
Ms. Alyson Rae Lawson
Can you briefly introduce yourself in a few sentences.
My name is Alyson Rae Lawson. I am the CEO of RaeLawson Enterprise LLC and RaeLawson Enterprise 2.0 LLC, a franchisee/operator of two 7-Eleven convenient stores with gas location in Arlington, Texas on the corner of Matlock and I-20. |
What motivates you in difficult times?
Haters!!! Haters ALWAYS motivate me. I love showing people that I am stronger than they think. But I, also, do it for my family and those who have supported me growing up. I can’t give up! I have to keep going! |
What is your biggest goal in life?
I currently have no goal. It may sound weird to say, but I honestly have never set goals for myself. I take waves and monumental times as they come and capitalize off of them. My goal is to be the best at whatever I do.

How did you become the owner of two 7/11s?
My mother is a successful realtor in the DFW area and my father is a former franchisee of three McDonald’s. I grew up looking up to them. Wanting to be like them. My father is very business and accounting savvy. My mother is very social and knows how to work a room and network. I feel like they gave me best of both worlds. So, I think entrepreneurship was in my blood.
I was sitting in corporate America, knowing that I, personally, needed more and could do more if given the opportunity. I reached out to a few franchises and 7-Eleven was the first to reach back out. I, actually, entered the nationwide 7-Eleven Women in Franchising contest after that and won!!!! One year later, I bought my second store!!!

What would be your advice to teenage girls who would someday like to have their own business?
My advice to teenage girls is to BE YOU!!! I did not get to where I am being what everyone else wanted me to be. I was loud, outgoing, overly friendly, hard working, competitive and so much more. I was always 100% UNAPOLOGETICALLY me at all times. That is what got me this far and that is what is making my business successful. BE YOU! You never know where it can take you!

Did you have a dream job growing up, and if so, what was it?
Growing up, I never really had a dream job. I do not think I ever really thought about it. I was always a “here and now” type person. When I was in high school, I had to get braces and from then on, I thought that I wanted to be an orthodontist. I thought it was so very interesting the knowledge he knew and the smiles he brought on people’s faces. Turns out I couldn’t pass biology 101!!! Switched to a business major in college and have been thriving in it ever since!

My parents!!! I have wanted to be like them since I can remember. They were great role models to me and they inspire me all the time. My mother, I talk to her daily. She is always throwing out ideas and giving me sounds advice. My father, is quiet. He laughs at my struggles because he understands them as a former franchisee and then gives me lessons and advice afterwards!

What's your least favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is the people. It is weird because I am the friendliest homebody you will ever meet! I, sincerely, enjoy my rest and being secluded at home, but I, also, love being with people; seeing my frequent customers every day and meeting new ones. I wish that was the only part I had to do sometimes because it truly makes me happy!

How does it feel to know you achieved something so big?
It feels amazing. I think the best part is hearing others tell me how inspired they are by my journey. It lets me know that I am doing something right. And that is really the satisfaction that makes me feel good daily.

Ms. Nakeah Fuller of Nakeah Cosmetics of Hollywood
Interviewed by Jazzeline Cager July 2020
1. What or who inspired you to go into cosmetics?
It was truly GOD. I prayed to find my calling as I never felt fulfilled working in Corporate America and I knew there had to be something more in life. I found myself doing everyone’s makeup for special events as a hobby and many noticed that I was really good at it, even before I realized it myself. I was booked for my first professional photo shoot and the photographer invited his agent (who also represented Professional Makeup Artist) to watch me work during a photoshoot. I had no idea who she was. She asked for my contact information. She later called me and asked me to come to her office. She signed me as a Professional Makeup Artist to one of Dallas’ Top Agencies and I began being booked for commercials and corporate campaigns. I often share, “you never know who’s watching”. I worked in the Texas Market for many years which lead to being booked for a movie in Hollywood. (Enjoy the Screw Driver Story at www.nakeahfuller.com)
2. Who has given you the best advice in life and in your business?
I’ve received great advice from many people including numerous legends; however, my brother, Keith Fuller, has given me the best advice throughout my career.
3. What was that advice?
He once said to me “Success doesn’t come easy Nakeah, you must be willing to go through the process”. (The best advice ever).
4. Was there ever a time that you wanted to give up on your business?
Absolutely. Entrepreneurship is tough. While many are sleeping, I’m working. While many are partying, I’m working (building & pursuing more success). This is why it’s important to find and know your passion. b/c work never feels like work when you do what you love.
5. Did you always want to be in cosmetics and/or a businesswoman?
No. I went to college to become a Nurse. In my jr year, I changed my major to Business Administration. My mother is a nurse so I thought it was only right that I do the same. I hadn’t discovered my own identity. Until I found myself doing everyone’s makeup for parties in my dorm room in college. My dorm room became the makeup room for all the ladies on campus. Later after working a few years in Corporate America, I discovered a book titled “Fine Beauty” and I discovered the world of Professional Makeup Artistry. I began to research, work for Beauty Brands to develop my talent all while discovering more & more about working in the industry (in Hollywood, Europe, and New York) as a professional.
6. Who is your biggest role model and why?
My biggest role model I would have to say is Oprah Winfrey. Why? Because she has overcome many obstacles throughout her childhood, and throughout her young adult life as a female and an African American Career Women. She rose above it all and never EVER gave up. As well, I’m personally aware that she loves helping others just as I. Giving back is very important.
7. What is your motivation?
My motivation is the desire & ability to live a fulfilled life without having any regrets. Many people are afraid to go for their dreams. They settle and often live with silent depression because of their regrets, their lack of motivation, or because they simply chose to settle. I’m motivated to never wake up one day and have the regret of never experiencing everything that I’ve always wanted to experience in life; beyond just watching it on a movie or tv show. I’ve been motivated to make living on the beach in Malibu and waking up to the ocean every day (that same ocean that I once watched on movies as a young woman growing up) it is now my very own truth.
8. What was your main goal when you started your business?
My main goal was to empower as many women as possible. Makeup is a dynamic accessory used to enhance & empower what is already there. I’ve always wanted to provide makeup for movies, tv shows, runway shows, and women around the world while having my own beauty brand. I’m grateful to now 100% own Nakeah Cosmetics of Hollywood (www.nakeahcosmetics.com)
9. Who are some of the celebrities you've worked with?
Harrison Ford, Chaka Khan, Mike Epps, Pierce Brosnan, Victoria Justice, Russell Simmons, Loretta Devine, Kim Burrell & many more.
10. What’s your favorite place to visit?
Paris
11. What is your favorite food?
Thai Food
12. What’s you favorite color?
Pink
13. What’s the one thing that you want to accomplish next?

14. How does it feel to be successful?
Success feels great! There’s levels to success. Meaning, once you accomplish your goal, there are more goals to accomplish. The key is to keep going; keep conquering while enjoying the success. Being successful can bring anxiety as you have to be very careful as to who you can trust and who you cannot trust. You have to always be mindful of this which is why most successful people are quite guarded. You have to also remain focused while working hard consistently to maintain great success while continuing to focus on the next level of goals.. As well, you have to be mindful of the importance to have balance by scheduling personal time (with no work); time for fun, time for family and time to enjoy true friends. Having great balance is quite crucial. Many successful people can become lonely (b/c they can’t trust anyone) or b/c they’re workaholics and forget to schedule time for themselves as they’re always ‘in character’. You have to know when to turn it on, and when to turn work off. Success has it’s pros & cons. But, when you’re surrounded by good people; people who truly care about you (not what you can do for them), that makes a major difference.
15. What advice would you give to me and other teenagers?
Never be afraid to leave your comfort zone. I do suggest planning to leave your hometown and live somewhere else at least once in your adult life. Move to a new city, a new state or country (at least once). Experience different lifestyles and different cultures.
Travel as frequent as you can. It’s such a beautiful world out there. There’s so much to see! So much to learn and experience.
Don’t make excuses in life. Set goals and execute those goals. (no excuses)
Never let anything or anyone stand in the way of you pursuing your dreams.
Pray often and follow your true passion. Never settle for just being comfortable in life.
Always do what you love while focusing on what truly makes you happy.
Meet new people often and nurture all good relationships.

I’ve recently launched a new women’s network titled “Brunch And Beauties”.
